Milan Player Ratings vs Juventus: Lethargic Rossoneri Make History

Milan and Juventus shared the spoils in a bloodless Serie A derby as the Allianz Stadium crowd paid for the tickets, only to watch a chess match. In a game of few chances, Stefano Pioil’s side did better in terms of possession, but their hosts had slightly more promising scoring opportunities.

Despite delivering another toothless performance following a 2-1 derby defeat to Inter on Monday, Milan made history with today’s draw. For the first time in a storied tradition of this fixture, Rossoneri have gone unbeaten in five consecutive away matches against Juventus. But that’s not what the fans expected from Pioli’s lads.

After an apathetic display against Inter, the San Siro faithful wanted a reaction, one that Rossoneri failed to provide in Turin. Milan finished the game without a shot on target but preserved a five-point lead on third-placed Juventus as a runner-up finish looms larger. 

In a forgettable game, goalkeeper Marco Sporitello was Milan’s top performer by some margin, while Rafael Leao flopped in another high-profile contest. It’s time to look at our player ratings.

Marco Sportiello – 7.5

Swooped in for Mike Maignan in the last moment, the Italian stopper held up his end of the bargain, registering seven saves to earn the ‘Man of The Match’ award.

Alessandro Florenzi – 6.5

His commendable defensive contribution overshadowed numerous sloppy passes and mindless long-range attempts when he should’ve passed the ball or whipped in a cross.

Malick Thiaw – 7

Despite occasional lapses of concentration, the young gun enjoyed a solid game against Dusan Vlahovic, performing far better than he did in the reverse fixture, where he picked up a red.

Matteo Gabbia – 7

After several nightmarish displays, the Italian center-back fared reasonably well today, especially in aerial duels, helping Milan thwart Juventus’ famous set-piece threats.

Yunus Musah – 6.5

A moment of madness at the end of the first half nearly cost Milan dearly, but other than that slip-up, the USMNT star had a decent game in an unorthodox position.

Yacine Adli – 6

He’s too slow for the Serie A standard. His passing might be clean and precise, but sometimes, it feels like he needs an eternity to distribute the ball.

Tijjani Reijnders – 6.5

Lackadaisical at times but far more energetic than his partner in the double pivot, the Dutchman showed moments of inspiration, but those were few and far between. 

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 5.5

The Englishman’s near-anonymous appearance was among the main reasons Milan failed to put Wojciech Szczesny to the test.

Christian Pulisic – 5

No one can dispute his commitment and desire when he’s on the ball. However, his trademark runs were nowhere to be seen today. 

Rafael Leao – 5.5

Apart from sporadic attempts to beat his marker one-on-one, the Portuguese winger endured another below-par derby, failing to impact proceedings, perhaps due to Theo Hernandez’s absence.

Olivier Giroud – 4.5

It’s not his fault his teammates couldn’t create a single opportunity for him.
